Sophie Cohen makes sweet potato latkes, different from tradition, but then so is Sophie.
Two sweet potatoes peeled and shredded.
Two eggs lightly beaten.
One husband, first hopeful and loving, then aloof, now missing.
Three children.
All separately disgruntled, distant, denied.
One job, she wants to save everyone, but can’t even salvage her own family.
She stands over the oven with frying pan and flour and brown sugar and cloves.
Sticky clumps of cinnamon.
The youngest, Sandy, usually angry, this morning is eager to help.
“Here,” she says, handing him a bowl and spoon.
In two years she’ll cook alone.
